Stark County Family & Ag Resource Campus

Dickinson, North Dakota

The Stark County Family & Ag Services Campus is a 30,000 square foot administrative building with the foremost goal of elevating the level of services provided to the residents of Stark County. The facility houses four different programs, each with their own distinct mission to provide community outreach and assistance of varying types, including Human Services, NDSU Extension, Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center, and Sunrise Youth Bureau. From this mix, secondary goals of the shared facility emerged centered around safety and security; confidentiality and privacy; functional separation of the programs; and efficiency by utilizing shared spaces. All of these factors informed a design solution featuring a multi-wing building with four distinct public entrances, organized along a central spine to minimize travel distances between the 50+ offices and connect the programs to a shared Community training rooms, kitchen and employee breakroom. Courtyards positioned between the building’s wings and along the central spine are landscaped with low-maintenance and locally prominent plants that create a link between the building’s users and the environment and county at large.
