As the “Gateway to Georgia History,” Port Wentworth boasts a rich past, now skating into a vibrant future as the home to the Savannah Ghost Pirates, a professional minor league ice hockey team in the ECHL. Zawyer Sports, a private entity and owner of the Ghost Pirates, needed a practice facility and venue that would build excitement for the sport throughout the region. As the project progressed, a partnership was formed to combine two developing facilities, Zawyer’s hockey venue and the City of Port Wentworth’s new amphitheater. Here, JLG’s design team worked with the private venture and City staff through programming and pre-design to determine the final program and concept. In collaboration with the City, Zawyer Sports has since broken ground on a 90,000 SF training facility, with a two-sheet ice rink on a 150-acre multi-use park. Combined programming contributes a restaurant, along with a 4,500-seat amphitheater and unique club-level seating and suites, collectively providing 145,800 SF of brand-new performance and sporting venue space. These facilities will be located in Port Wentworth’s new Anchor Park, which will incorporate a variety of multi-use fields and courts, including space for pickleball, softball, baseball, and soccer. The new Ghost Pirates Ice Cove and City of Port Wentworth’s Amphitheater are set to open in the spring of 2026, elevating the athlete, fan, and community experience.
