With the inmate population rising, Minnehaha County, JLG Architects (Architect of Record) and BWBR (Secure Environments Design Architect) designed an expansion to the 15-year-old jail that would meet both the current and future capacity needs of the County, while still maintaining plan and staff efficiency and functionality that made the existing jail work so well. The expansion added 320 beds to the existing 400 bed count, relocated and enhanced support spaces such as the vehicle sally port, prisoner intake, medical, and jail administration and staff support spaces, all while maintaining the day-to-day operations of the existing jail. New technologies were integrated to streamline the adjudication process, moving it from the courthouse into the jail.
