In response to a housing shortage in the wake of the Bakken oil boom in Western North Dakota, Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) retained JLG and Dakota Commercial and Development, Inc. to develop a 66-unit mixed-use project in downtown Williston, ND. CHI’s intent was to provide affordable housing options to recruit and retain staff for their hospital, Mercy Medical, and for other key employers like the City of Williston and the Williston Public School District. One block off main street, Mercy Heights offers an array of residential floorplans and first floor commercial designed for single or multiple tenancy. The contoured site naturally accepts below-grade parking, with the balance provided in off-street lots. The building design incorporates brick to tie to the downtown infrastructure and modern forms and materials that give the project presence and permanence. With this project, CHI was able to meet the City’s demand for affordable housing while helping Williston meet the increasing demand for medical, educational, and public service employment.
