The MDU Resources Community Bowl is located on the west end of the Bismarck State College (BSC) campus and overlooks the Missouri River. The Community Bowl serves as ‘home’ field for the local high schools and the University of Mary, football, soccer, and track teams, and is the current host for the North Dakota State Track Meet. To complete a stadium renovation plan, JLG coordinated with a multi-disciplinary team to elevate the fan and student-athlete experience, including designs for new support buildings, additional seating, and improved locker and training rooms.
Beyond the new entry plaza and monumental stair that leads visitors to the 50-yard line, the site saw other improvements such as concessions, restrooms, media boxes, coach’s rooms, and private suites. JLG also addressed the nearly 20-year-old nine-lane running track by resurfacing it with a two-part polyurethane material – restoring the track’s lifespan and ability to absorb shock. In the seating around the track, the team used BIM software that allowed BSC to examine the views from all seating areas to confirm clear views to the outermost lanes. JLG’s landscape architects also worked closely with the team, planning site grading that would enhance ADA regulation and accessibility for all. Today, the MDU Community Bowl is one of North Dakota’s finest outdoor football, soccer, and track facilities, offering students, athletes, and enthusiasts an enhanced athletic experience, unlike any other.
