Eastgate Apartments

With a growing Owatonna community and workforce housing needs on the rise, JLG teamed with MetroPlains developers to complete a 60,567 SF multi-family complex on an underutilized site within a well-established neighborhood. To design a four-story building appropriate to the scale of the neighborhood’s late 19th and early 20th century homes, JLG broke up the massing of the street façade with high-quality residential materials and a varied roofline, reducing a portion of the building to two stories. The team also leveraged the sloped site for completely below-grade parking adjacent to the single-family homes. Completed in 2021, Eastgate Apartments met the high standards of MHFA requirements for state tax credit funding, including heavy adoption of the Green Communities program and its initiatives for sustainable design and development. Serving a community rooted in the industrial, manufacturing, and service industries, MetroPlains achieved its goal to deliver affordable housing aligned with the City of Owatonna’s goals; providing a quality environment that reinforces growth and retains the residency of local citizens.
