GRAND FORKS, N.D. – APRIL 20, 2026 – On April 16–17, Architect-of-Record JLG Architects was on site for the beam-signing of the new Altru Sports Complex in Grand Forks, ND. Team and community leaders were invited to make their mark on the final beam before it was placed at the peak. JLG celebrated this milestone alongside the City of Grand Forks, Grand Forks Park District, Altru Health Systems, McGough Construction, Construction Engineers, and BRS Architecture.
THE ALTRU SPORTS COMPLEX
Altru Sports Complex’s nearly 300,000 SF facility will bring year-round community recreation, with hosting capabilities for both regional and national tournament play. The Complex will feature a full-sized indoor turf field for soccer, football, lacrosse, and multi‑sport training, along with versatile hard-court surfaces for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and tournaments. The Complex will also be the primary practice and home competition venue for local club and high school swim teams, with a best-in-class aquatics center that supports future program growth.
Community‑focused amenities, including an elevated walking track, multi‑use rooms, concessions, and flexible athletic development spaces, will make the Complex a welcoming hub for camps, clinics, after-school programs, and local events.

FUN FACTS
- 1,108 surveys were conducted to gather community feedback to inform the facility’s design.
- The natatorium will have a 30′ deep diving well for UND aerospace training.
- The facility is designed with approximately 77 toilets.
- Inclusive design is executed through a sensory room and two wellness rooms.
- 67 tip-n-roll bleachers help support a variety of sporting events.
- There is a ¼ mile of common circulation space in the facility.
- Rare for a facility of this size, mechanical units are not visible from the exterior.
MILESTONES
- On November 4, 2023, Altru Health Systems announced a naming rights commitment of $10 million to the Altru Sports Complex project, to be paid over 25 years, contingent upon voters’ approval.
- On November 14, 2023, citizens voted to extend the 3/4% sales tax collected for the Alerus Center beyond the 2029 sunset date, designating funds for both Alerus Center Capital Maintenance Projects and the construction of an indoor turf, aquatics & court facility.
- On April 15, 2024, the City Council voted to award the Architect of Record to JLG Architects.
- The new Altru Sports Complex broke ground on June 27, 2025.
- Beam-Signing scheduled for April 16—17, 2026.
- Phase I is scheduled for an October 2027 completion.
- Phase II is scheduled for a spring 2028 completion.
ON THE HORIZON
Beyond Altru Sports Complex, JLG is currently leading ongoing work at Mosaic Quarter’s 100-acre sports and entertainment development in Tucson, AZ. JLG is also leading the renovation and expansion of Maple Grove Community Center in Maple Grove, MN, which celebrated its Phase I completion in March 2026. In Port Wentworth, GA, another JLG project, the Port Wentworth Ice Cove & Amphitheater, is scheduled to open its doors in August 2026, including a 5,000-seat amphitheater and 90,000-square-foot training facility, with a two-sheet ice rink and multi-use park.
