Maple Grove Community Center Renovation & Expansion

Maple Grove, Minnesota

JLG is working with the City of Maple Grove on the renovation and expansion of Maple Grove Community Center, a social and recreational hub for ice sports, aquatics, fitness, events, and youth and senior activities. Maple Grove’s aging facility and population growth has called for more recreation space to continue providing these services and amenities to the community. Phase 1 of the project included the addition of a third ice sheet and renovations to the to the existing two sheet facility.

While the first phase of Maple Grove Community Center’s renovation and expansion focused on ice sports, its final phase is warming up with indoor and outdoor aquatics. JLG has been working with the City of Maple Grove to reimagine its aquatics programming, starting with a clean slate and fall demo of the existing indoor and outdoor pools. The complete rebuild will expand the outdoor aquatics space, pools, and deck within the constraints of the existing “backyard” area, adding two water slides, a zero-depth entry toddler space, a splash pad, and a multi-use turf area that can transition from lounging and yoga classes to overflow pool deck space and outdoor event space for banquets and socials. The design will also expand the indoor aquatics space, growing the previous footprint to include a third body of water in a program pool, two full water slides, opportunity for a ninja cross, and a new zero-depth entry wading pool with a climbable structure for youth and toddlers.

Following the City’s acquisition of a former Lifetime Fitness facility, JLG is doubling the amount of natural light and creating a new skyway bridge connecting the main community center with the former fitness facility and relocated locker rooms and family locker rooms. This adds an “elevated” deck space for conditioned viewing of the pool area, as well as critical circulation tying together all areas of the renovated community center. This more efficient design repurposes the former outdoor locker rooms to serve as the new pool equipment space for both indoor and outdoor pools, consolidating all equipment and chemical storage in a more economical and safer environment.

Additional amenities in Phase 2 will include expanded space for senior programs, expanded event and banquet space, space for the arts, new walking track, infrastructure improvements, and a new indoor playground.

Once complete, the new Maple Grove Community Center will stand as a destination for recreation, competition, culture, and connection; serving the City’s growth and the entire region year-round.
