Wahpeton Recreation Center

Wahpeton, North Dakota

Each year, the City of Wahpeton’s northern borders edge closer to one of North Dakota’s largest cities. With the potential for growth and the need to support the increasing recreational needs of current residents, the City analyzed their current challenges, facilities, and programs. With many of their existing facilities undersized, JLG collaborated with the City in the pre-design and planning of a new, larger facility that would be capable of replacing aging facilities and expanding program offerings. To better understand the needs of the community, JLG conducted various community engagement efforts, then analyzed feedback to provide direction for implementation. The team explored an array of options for building size and layout, determining an optimal pathway to align community needs with available funding. In the pre-design, spaces were intentionally programmed to allow for the highest utilization of space across demographics, identifying areas of interest for the active aging adult population, the youth, and the general public. In addition, a future phase-out plan was developed so the building could expand, either in the future or if additional funds become available.

Wahpeton voters approved additional funding in May 2025, making a big stride forward to bring the new recreation center to life. JLG is now working with the City to validate programming and proceed to construction administration. Overall, the Center will become an asset to fulfill the growing needs of their community while attracting new families and young professionals.
