Bloomington Ice Garden Renovation

Bloomington, Minnesota

Bloomington Ice Garden has been a staple of the community since the first of its three rinks was built in 1969. A second and third rink were added in 1975 and 1992, along with ongoing renovations and additional program spaces led by JLG, including a 2019 entry addition with ADA upgrades and Rink 1 and 2 locker room improvements. In 2023, JLG was once again recruited to conduct a facility assessment to examine the wetland site and Ice Garden facilities, resulting in prioritization of new rinks, dashers, and a new ammonia ice system. Replacement of the original roof was also high priority, including a new EPDM roof designed to handle future PV panels. Within the facility, efficiency upgrades to existing dehumidification, mechanical, and electrical systems are aimed at extending the life of the facilities in compliance with requirements for stormwater and wetland boundaries. JLG also helped define ADA accommodation for accessible pathways, platforms, restrooms, and lifts. Additional renovation will provide a 360-degree mezzanine level in the new NHL-sized high school rink, improved parking and fan seating, new scoreboards and a central sound system, new high school locker rooms and concessions, enhanced security, an upgraded building management system, and modernization of interior and exterior finishes. To expedite construction, the team closed the facilities for the summer of 2025, anticipating occupancy by October 1st, with final completion by December 2025. Staying true to its existing footprint, Bloomington Ice Garden will revitalize fan interest, athlete performance, program growth, and operational resilience.
