Berntson, a licensed Architect (Minnesota) and certified as a LEED Accredited Professional, has been a Healthcare Project Architect at JLG Architects since September 2024. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1991, where she earned a Bachelor of Architecture.
In the field for 34 years, she focused on the production and technical end of project delivery, working directly with clients, consultants, and leading internal production teams. “I’ve done a variety of project work over the years, and 11 of those years have been dedicated to the healthcare sector, an area that is both interesting and rewarding to me,” said Berntson.
“As a Project Architect in the Healthcare Studio, EDAC certification is important to me; I have always valued evidence-based design solutions,” said Berntson. “By utilizing evidence-based design, we provide clients with credible, data-driven solutions tailored to their specific programming. These strategies directly enhance patient care and staff efficiency, ensuring we meet and exceed project goals.”

About Evidence-Based Design
Evidence-based design drives JLG’s award-winning healthcare portfolio, with each project focused on improving patient outcomes, staff efficiency, rural healthcare access, and overall facility performance. The firm’s comprehensive EBD efforts—known to shorten hospital stays, increase patient satisfaction, and reduce risk of infection—involve systematically evaluating the physical and psychological effects of the built environment on users. Promoting healing by design, JLG Architects demonstrates EBD through single-patient rooms, workstation accessibility, staff respite space, optimized layouts, noise-reduction materials, and use of natural elements, including natural light, organic materials, and biophilic features that foster outdoor connectivity.
