University of North Dakota Ralph Engelstad Arena

Grand Forks, North Dakota

The Ralph, an 11,700-seat arena, is renowned as one of the finest hockey facilities in the world; an arena that encompasses its benefactor’s vision, character, and unmatched passion for hockey. JLG worked closely with UND to create a state-of-the-art design that would complement the University of North Dakota’s warm campus appeal through its familiar building attributes and brick exterior. With extensive use of glass and curtain wall, visitors can easily catch a glimpse of the excitement inside. The richness of the 400,000 SF Arena is enhanced by the Italian marble-floored concourses, leather padded and cherry wood seats, and raised brass signage. The five-story arena’s main lobby area includes ticket sales and coach offices and is highlighted by a sky-lit pro shop and spacious “Sioux Tradition” area displaying memorabilia. Generous main and upper concourses offer concessions at each of the four corners with two additional super food courts on the main level. Television monitors placed along the concourses and in restrooms ensure fans never miss a moment of action on the ice. The ice level has world-class locker rooms, a 10,000 SF training room with weight training area, players’ lounge, and a study/classroom. Tying into these team spaces is an additional Olympic-size practice ice sheet, drawing top-tier athletes and excited fans from across the country.
